How best to find an ESL job

companies and schools who are looking for potential employees

Also…Look for web sites of well-known and well established private English schools such as EF, Wallstreet English, Web International, GLV China, Longer Training Centre, Kai En English Training Center, Linguaphone Consulting (China) etc.
And… Lots of International schools in Shanghai are looking for teachers with higher qualifications. Here is a list of International Schools:-

Q: Are there any cultural factors I should take into consideration?
Dress code depends on individual schools, some require formal dress code, some are less formal.
It’s important to be observant, formal and professional since people hold teachers in high regard.

Qualifications needed
 
Q: What qualifications are needed to find an ESL job in Thailand?
 
Original diploma and transcripts from University, College or Technical School.  Although a university degree is not an absolute MUST for an English speaker to work in some organizations in some cities in China, any kind of documentation regarding your educational background or work experience will be useful, especially if you want to work in a decent institute.
A TEFL certificate alone enables your future employer to get you a legal work visa in less developed areas (eg: relatively small cities).

Q: What documents are required for obtaining a visa and/or work permit?
    • In cities like Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen, you must have both Bachelor’s degree and TEFL certificate for your future employer to get you a legal work visa. Job prospects throughout China and Asia are very good and available for professionals of all nationalities though native speakers between 22 and 60 years old with equal qualifications are preferred.

Q: What kinds of teaching jobs am I likely to find?
 
All cities around China are in need of English teachers. The location is a personal choice of interest and preference.

Good times of year

Q: Are there any particular times of year it is better, or easier, to look for a teaching job?
 
New semester starts on September each year till end of January, it’s best to start locating possible jobs in March at the start of the second semester, which runs till end of June.

Q: What is the average salary?
 
Depending on different cities and contact hours of the job Salary range from 4,500rmb to 16,000rmb per month, hourly rate goes from 100rmb to 300rmb.

Q: On average how many teaching hours would I work per week?

About 20-30 hours per week depending on the school
Housing

Q: Would I be expected to find my own housing, or would it be provided by the school?
 
It varies from school to school and city to city, some provide fully furnished apartment, some give you an allowance every month if you choose not to take the provided accommodation. Those schools usually help their foreign teachers to look for somewhere to rent.

  • Be prepared that some schools might ask you to demonstrate your teaching skills and abilities on the spot. 
Steps to find a teaching position:
1)      search online for favorable schools or through recommendations
2)      send CV and establish contact
3)      call up and arrange for a tour of the school
4)      ask if you could talk to current or former teachers for details
5)      negotiate if possible for airfare reimbursement, salary and holidays
