Earn Credit for TEFL International TESOL CourseI write this letter as a professional course evaluation and credit recommendation for TEFL International TESOL certificate courses. I first became aware of TEFL International TESOL courses through my position in the Outreach office of the University of Washington. Though this office I developed a successful Service Learning Project in which we sent several University of Washington students to participate in training with TEFL International for credit. As part of this project, I and other members of staff did a thorough review of the TEFL International curriculum. I have developed a professional evaluation of credit-worthiness which is available for review. This evaluation shows TEFL International’s 120-hour TESOL course worthy of 6.7 credits at most US universities. In fact, a number of universities have granted credit for this program in addition to those who participated in the University of Washington program that has now been discontinued. As part of the evaluation for the University of Washington, the head of the MA TESOL department granted graduate credit for completion of the TESOL course on a case-by-case basis. Through my credit evaluation, other universities should grant similar credit. For instance, Observed Teaching Practice can be counted as credit towards a Teaching Practicum. Language Awareness can also be granted credit. Finally, Teaching Methodology should also be credit worthy in an MA TESOL program. As a professional in educational program evaluation I am available to assist any TEFL International TESOL certificate course holder gain undergraduate or graduate credit for their participation. Is Accreditation, TESOL courses and TEFL International When searching for a TESOL course, the term “Accredited” is used frequently and, unfortunately, very loosely by many course providers. What exactly does it mean to be an “accredited” TESOL course? One definition that seems appropriate here is a course that is “meeting all formal official requirements of academic excellence, curriculum, facilities, etc.” Using this definition it is likely that most legitimate TESOL course providers meet the definition of “accredited”. However, “accredited” is also used to claim a credit-bearing relationship with a college or university. It seems many of our competitors claim this level of accreditation but upon further investigation, these claims do not usually hold up. Therefore, here at TEFL International we try to be very careful with our usage of the term “Accredited” but despite our care, confusion and misunderstandings still exist. Most importantly, TEFL International does not claim nor has it ever claimed to be universally accredited by any college or university. However, the TEFL International TESOL certificate course has been reviewed for US-university credit worthiness by Dr. Bill Leon and his evaluation and assistance is available to every TEFL International graduate. This has allowed people to receive university credit through dozens, if not hundreds of US universities. All it takes is the documents produced by Dr. Leon, a College Counselor willing to assist them, the TEFL International TESOL Course Outline and a completed Trainee Portfolio (to show the level of your work). The evaluation of Dr. Leon as well as his instructions and assistance should assist our graduates in obtaining credit from virtually any US college or university. However, all students should be aware that completion of the TEFL International course does not automatically grant or guarantee credit. The reason is very simple—the standard for passing our course is lower than the standard most universities use for granting credit. In other words, some of you may end up passing the course but may not have passed it to a level worthy of university credit. This is especially true of students enrolled in our PELT course designed for non-native speakers. If we forced all of our students to produce US university Masters or even Undergraduate level work, far too many of our students would fail.
