Ho Chi Minh City was formerly the capital of South Vietnam and was known as ‘Saigon’. It is the largest city in Vietnam with a population of approximately 7 million people. This city is recognised as the main cultural and economic hub of modern day Vietnam and has one of the fastest rates of economic growth anywhere in the world. Ho Chi Minh is the base for many modern multi-national companies but still manages to retain its culture and traditions and is today a vibrant and bustling mix of street vendors, roadside cafes, markets, stalls and shops. It is truly a wonderful location in which to take our TEFL course.
This city has experienced a history which has been more turbulent than most but it still manages to retain a vibrant and optimistic atmosphere. There are many things to see and do in the city including the Historical Museum which displays exhibits from the Bronze Age, Tran and Le Dynasties and Agnor Watt, Ben Thanh market which is the largest local market in the city, the War Crimes Museum exhibiting crimes committed by both sides during the Vietnam War and Chinatown featuring the spectacular Thien Hau Temple.
Just outside of Ho Chi Minh City there are many superb white, sandy beaches along the coast and tall mountainous regions inland. Ho Chi Minh City Climate
This city is located only 10.5º north of the equator and 5m to 10m above sea level. It therefore experiences a warm, tropical climate with distinct dry and rainy seasons. The dry season (winter) lasts from late November through to April with temperatures averaging 26ºC (83 ºF). The rainy season (summer) lasts from May through to November with June and August being the wettest months. Throughout the rainy season rainfall usually occurs for short periods in the late afternoon. The hottest months are from February through to May.
