Kolkata was formerly known by its colonial name of Calcutta and is also known as the ‘City of Joy’. It is most famous for its artistic, literary and cultural heritage. It was formerly the capital city of India and is home to many architecturally interesting buildings, museums and art galleries. It was also once the base of the British Raj HQ for colonial rule in India. This city offers a magical experience to our TEFL trainees. It is a large city with much Victorian architecture and is the Intellectual capital of India.
While in Kolkata take the opportunity to see the Howrah Bridge built in 1943 and often referred to as the world’s busiest bridge. Take in the Ramakrishna Temple, the Victoria Monument and walk around the city’s verdant gardens and waterways built by the British. You should also visit the botanical gardens which are the second largest in the world and contain 50,000 different species of plants and one of the biggest trees in the world, a 200 year old Banyan tree. The canopy of the tree is a huge 1.2 hectares with a circumference of 304 metres.
