Cultural considerations

Q: Are there any cultural factors I should take into consideration?


Dress Code / Appearance

·         Shorts won’t be accepted

·         All tattoos should be covered.

·         Women: You cannot wear any revealing clothes. Sleeveless shirts/dresses are not acceptable, unless they are covered by a short-sleeve/long-sleeve shirt. Shoulders must be covered. Also, no low-cut necklines or skirts/trousers that come above the knee. Bare midriffs must not be visible, even lifting arms up. Open-toed shoes are acceptable, but must be formal.

·         Men: Long pants, no shorts or raggedy jeans. Short or long-sleeved shirt with a collar, a tie is not required. Loafers or dress shoes, open-toed shoes, sandals and tennis shoes are not acceptable. Long hair should be neatly tied back into a pony-tail.

Qualifications needed

Q: What qualifications are needed to find an ESL job in Thailand?

  • TESOL Certificate
  • Bachelors Degree

Documents required for visa/work permit

Q: What documents are required for obtaining a visa and/or work permit?

  • Copies of certificates of professional expertise and skills
  • University graduation degree (or equivalent) or higher certificate
  • TESOL Certificate
  • Criminal Record Check authorized body of the country of residence
  • Proof of experience ie. references
  • All degrees and certificates must be notarized at the Vietnamese embassy in your country of residence

  • Mostly language centres, but some International schools too

The school year runs from August to June.

It depends on the school, but most language centres have no contracts.

Q: What is the average salary?

Approx. 15 – 20 $USD per hour.

Q: On average how many teaching hours would I work per week?

Approx. 20 hours per week

Housing

Q: Would I be expected to find my own housing, or would it be provided by the school?

Usually teachers are expected to find their own accommodation
